BABY surprise! SWEATER

My daughters keep telling me this soon to be born baby boy is going to be the best dressed baby on the West Coast if I keep this up--but, hey--I have only knit 2 sweaters so far...

This one is the (in)famous Elizabeth Zimmermann BABY SURPRISE SWEATER. I rarely knit from patterns --- and so I had to get the DVD (here) to be able to follow this pattern. Watching the DVD as I knit this up really did make this a piece of cake to knit. This pattern is so popular that there are a zillion of these on Ravelry, and Elizabeth Zimmermann has so many followers --with blog devoted to knitters who love her and her patterns : Zimmermania. I first discover Elizabeth via her book KNITTING WITHOUT TEARS

in about 1975--and the very first sweater I knit was from that book--a Tom Tom sweater--knit with yarn I spun....

Appealing how the stripes work out on the front and the back of the sweater--huh? This knits up fast as it is all done in the knit stitch (no pearling). I knit it in organic washable wool--in colors the Mom-to-be picked out.

Next a toddler size in many bright colors....

One family of grandchildren arrived late, while the other was always 'can you carry it that long and live?' sort of situation. I never knit much of anything for them. What was I thinking? But I did weave blankets or make quilts for almost all of them.

I used to do the Elizabeth Zimmerman knitting a lot also. It is fun and fast, but as a continental knitter, I had to do untwist each stich after the first two rows. Sigh!

I've seen the pattern (as I have the books) but I've never made one. I hope you get some good pictures of baby wearing it.
