Bless the Grass

I could not post poems all month without including this poem (a folk song, actually) by
Malvina Reynolds which graces the sidewalk in front of our house. We delight in watching folks walk up the street and stop and read the song inscribed into the sidewalk--it is fun to see their reaction. (How this song got there in the sidewalk cement is another story)...if you want the music to this song (poem) go here and buy one of Malivina's songbooks or a CD.

GOD BLESS THE GRASS

God bless the grass that grows through the crack.
They roll the concrete over it to try and keep it back.
The concrete gets tired of what it has to do,
It breaks and it buckles and the grass grows through,

God bless the truth that fights toward the sun,
They roll the lies over it and think that it is done,
It moves through the ground and reaches the air,
And after awhile it is growing everywhere,

God bless the grass that grow through the cement.
It's green and it's tender and it's easily bent,
But after a while it lifts up its head,
For the grass is living and the stone is dead.

God bless the grass that's gentle and low,
Its roots they are deep and its will is to grow.
And God bless the truth, the friend of the poor,
And the wild grass growing at the poor man's door,

AND now a couple of small journal QUILTS, just for fun...with buttons and beads, of course! I made these awhile ago--when I was trying out my new sewing machine...and re-aquainting myself with sewing.

Thanks, Aurora--Your quilts are fabulous and...well, Malvina; what can I say. I had the privilege of holding her guitar once when she was taking a break in a club gig in Madison WI. "Little boxes, on a hillside, little boxes made of ticky-tacky...."

I feel your post too because I copied some poetry into the concrete of the entry to my house several years ago: T.S. Eliot, "We shall not cease from exploration/and the end of all our exploring/will be to arrive where we started/and know the place for the first time."

Poetry should just spring up everywhere. So should great journal quilts and troubadours.

I loved it all! The song on (in?) the side walk is just wonderful. I wonder who was thoughtful enough to put it there? What a conversation piece.

The quilts are really cool too. Very good. Are you doing the bead jouranl that Robin Atkins mentioned? I hope so. It starts in June.
